Rules of Engagement
General Info
- If you finish the starred route on your first attempt (you “flash” it), please get a new scorecard for the next category up as you will not be eligible to place in your current category.
- The starred routes will overlap with the next category; you will transfer this score to your new scorecard.
Scoring System
- Each route will have indicated zone holds with an associated score. The amount of points will increase by 5 points each zone as you progress up the wall. The top of the route (aka the “finish hold”) is scored at 25 points.
- The placarded, scored hold in each zone must be reached and established upon before the points for that zone may be awarded.
- The points scored in the zones are NOT cumulative. Each route is worth a total of 25 points.
Scorecards
- Each category has its own scorecard and corresponding routes.
- You will only climb routes in your category. Only those routes that correspond to your scorecard will count toward your final score.
- On the scorecard, each box to the right of the route represents an attempt. Record the zone score for each attempt on that route.
- Each attempt before reaching your final high point will result in a deduction of .1 points. Make sure every attempt is recorded, even if that attempt is zero.
Etiquette and Belaying
- The gym will place lead ropes around the gym. Lead climbers are welcome to use their own ropes or gym-provided ropes. Gym-provided ropes must remain in the general area where they were found.
- You must be lead or top rope certified prior to the competition. We will not conduct belay or lead tests during competition.
- Courtesy slack must be present. The climber should never put weight on the rope while making upward progress.
- Some routes in Advanced and Open are marked top rope only. Look for the designation on the placard.
Climbing
-
- Routes are one color from bottom to top. You must stay on that one color to stay on the route.
- To start a route, you can use any holds of the corresponding color reachable from the ground.
- All volumes, dihedrals, and aretes are “on” for hands and feet.
- The tan, permanent cracks, are not “on”. Do not use them.
- Do not use wall hardware (bolts or quickdraws) to make upward progress. T-nuts in the wall are similarly off; do not use them.
- To score points, a climber must “establish” on the placarded, scored hold within the zone.
- Establishing on a hold is defined by either changing direction from, or stopping momentum by controlling the use-able surface of the hold. Hitting the hold as you fall does not count as establishing, nor does touching the part of the hold that is not use-able surface.
- When you fall during an attempt, you must immediately lower to the pad. All attempts on a route must begin at the start. After falling, the turn is over and the next climber in line may begin climbing.
- Top rope climbers must establish on the indicated finish hold with at least one hand to finish the route and receive 25 points.
- Lead climbers must establish on the indicated finish hold with at least one hand and clip the lead anchors for their 25 points.
- Your scorecard will act as a placeholder on routes with a waiting line. Place your scorecard on the bottom of the stack and wait for it to come to the top. Each scorecard represents one person, not the pair of climbers.
