Maryann started working at the Alaska Rock Gym just over a year ago as a Youth Programs Instructor, and is now primarily working as a manager while also running the Adult Programs department. She taught martial arts for 9 years before she moved to Alaska and discovered climbing. Her unique experience as a martial arts instructor has allowed her to develop skills necessary to be a patient and effective communicator.
While attending Alaska Pacific University she took several climbing classes, and fell in love with the sport, specifically appreciating how climbing challenges her both mentally and physically. She loves how, in a single climbing session, a climber can overcome fears, solve complex problems, and push their body to its limit.
Maryann has an enthusiasm for teaching and enjoys sharing her knowledge with new and inexperienced climbers. She hopes to see the anchorage climbing community continue to grow and takes special interest in seeing young women empowered through their growth in climbing.
