Todd Helgeson
program instructor

Todd has been climbing for 25 years and has a wealth of both technical and practical experience in coaching and climbing training.  His philosophy on climbing and climbing training has been developed through many years of personal experience as well as consumption of endless books, videos, podcasts, and webcasts on climbing training and general fitness.  He is a believer in strength and mobility as platforms to build improved technique and movement efficiency. These lead to better climbing and enjoyment. After all, if it’s not enjoyable, why are we doing it!

Todd began climbing at the Alaska Rock Gym in 1995 when it first opened, and worked as a route setter for several years during college.  He has also assisted in coaching the youth team when he has had time available from work and family. He has climbed up to 5.14- and v13 and has been a key figure in the development of climbing in Alaska.  He has developed nearly 1000 boulder problems across South Central Alaska and wrote the Alaska Bouldering Guide.
