Adult Programs Instructor

Role Description

As an Adult Programs Instructor at Alaska Rock Gym, you will be responsible for delivering inclusive, engaging, and educational climbing instruction to adult participants across a variety of program offerings. Whether introducing new climbers to belay and movement fundamentals or guiding more seasoned climbers through advanced clinics and training groups, your role is to foster community, confidence, and competence within ARG’s adult climbing population in accordance with ARG policies and risk mitigation practices.

Adult Programs Instructors are expected to create a supportive and welcoming learning environment. Instructors lead with enthusiasm, strong communication, and a high level of professionalism. You will facilitate both structured instructional classes and informal community-focused sessions, encouraging a collaborative and motivated atmosphere that mirrors the values of Alaska Rock Gym.

Your duties will vary by program but may include:

  • Greeting and checking in participants
  • Leading technical instruction (belaying, climbing movement, crack climbing, etc.)
  • Managing time and transitions effectively during sessions
  • Promoting a positive and inclusive community for climbers of all backgrounds and abilities
  • Maintaining cleanliness and returning class resources post-class
  • Upholding and representing the ARG brand, values, and commitment to growth
  • Upholding ARG’s risk management policies

Instructors must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. Classes include (but are not limited to): Intro to Top Rope Belaying, Climbing Technique and Movement, Adaptive Night, Climbers Meet-Up Night, Adult Training Team, and various clinics and private lessons.

As a representative of Alaska Rock Gym, all employees are expected to be knowledgeable about the gym and its offerings, and stoked about the outdoor industry. Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Passion for climbing and enthusiasm for sharing the sport with others
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • 2+ years experience teaching or coaching adult learners
  • Ability to effectively lead and manage small to mid-sized groups (up to 15 participants)
  • Empathy for new climbers and those overcoming fear or physical barriers
  • Patience, flexibility, and a willingness to grow as an instructor
  • Previous experience in a leadership or facilitator role is a plus
  • A teachable attitude and openness to feedback

Adult Program Instructor Requirements and Job Expectations

  • All Adult Program staff are expected to work at least one shift per pay period or a minimum of three shifts per month to retain employment status.
  • Consistent availability is important. Any changes to availability or time off must be requested at least 4 weeks in advance.
  • Adult Private Lesson Instructors must maintain a regular and predictable availability pattern.
  • Pay rate starts at $17/hour, with private lessons compensated at $20/hour.

Bi-annual reviews are conducted in March and September. Pay raises are awarded based on peer reviews and feedback, as well as lesson demands. To apply, please submit your resume and two references to our website. Alaska Rock Gym is an equal opportunity employer.
