Gus Barber
program instructor

Gus has been climbing for 6 years and coaching and working at the Alaska Rock Gym for the last 4 years. He was on the youth climbing team early in his climbing career and has since developed a passion for training and coaching. He has coached climbers of all ages, working in kids’ programs and our adult climbing classes.

Gus takes a strength and technique focused approach to climbing, he believes both are critical to climbing for fun, performance and longevity. Gus also has 3 years of experience as a research technician in the UAA physiology lab and will gleefully geek out over the science of climbing and training with anyone interested.

Gus has climbed throughout Alaska and the western United States, primarily as a trad climber. He has been on the podium at the last 6 competitions he has competed in. He was recently published in the 2018 American Alpine Journal for his writing and photos of an expedition into the Arrigetch. Gus has climbed up to V10 and 5.12+ indoors and outside, on gear and on bolts.
